Radioprotective Nature of Podophyllum hexandrum (Himalayan Mayapple)

چکیده
Human beings are at risk of the exposure of radiation or radioactive materials since the World War II. Nuclear proliferation and terrorist activities has further strengthened the threats of the exposure of ionizing radiation (IR) to military, civilian, and emergency responders. IR possesses sufficient energy to strip electrons from atoms or molecules and thereby create highly reactive ions. IR at high enough doses either directly or indirectly induces ionization events that damage DNA, proteins or membrane lipids, through the generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and other free radicals intracellularly. Total Body Irradiation (TBI) is particularly dangerous when exposure is of very short period of time [1]. The Chernobyl Catastrophe and FukushimaDaiichi nuclear plant misfortunes exemplify the need of radiation countermeasures.

Pollinator scarcity drives the shift to delayed selfing in Himalayan mayapple Podophyllum hexandrum (Berberidaceae)
Recent molecular phylogenetics have indicated that American mayapple (mainly self-incompatible, SI) and Himalayan mayapple, which was considered to be self-compatible (SC), are sister species with disjunct distribution between eastern Asia and eastern North America. We test a hypothesis that the persistence of this earlyspring flowering herb in the Himalayan region is attributable to the transi...

This is the second article published in the Trees for Life Journal which deals with radioprotection (see http://www. tfljournal.org/article.php/2007042416194363 by Sancheti and Goyal). While it is not a major focus of this journal, radioprotection has interest for our readership and is attracting ever more attention within the scientific community. No synthetic radioprotective chemicals are ava...
متن کاملInfluence of plant size on female-biased sex allocation in a single-flowered, nectarless herb
Relative allocation to female and male function in hermaphroditic species often departs from strict equisexuality. Increased femaleness with plant size in animal-pollinated species has been proposed in theory and demonstrated in empirical studies. However, such size-dependent sex allocation (SDS) has not been observed in some insect-pollinated species, throwing doubt on the generalization of SD...
